Dental crowns are one of the most popular restorations used in dentistry. Dental crowns restore teeth that are broken or cracked, worn down, have severe decay, or have other issues that may be too big to be corrected with a filling. When too much tooth structure is lost, a crown is the best option, because it covers the entire tooth and supports it. Throughout the years the material dental crowns have been fabricated from has improved making them more natural looking and giving each patient more options to choose from.

Traditional crowns were made out of all gold or a layer of porcelain fused to a metal under structure called PFMs. These traditional crowns were extremely strong and durable but were very noticeable in the mouth because they weren’t natural looking. With the creation of Cerec crowns and all-porcelain crowns, a person’s smile can look more natural even with the placement of crowns.

All-Porcelain Crowns

All porcelain crowns are more beneficial than traditional crowns because they are white, translucent, and more natural looking. All-porcelain crowns are also bonded to a person’s tooth and feel and function like a natural tooth. Because all-porcelain crowns are so natural looking they can be used cosmetically as well as restore broken or decayed teeth. If a person is not happy with the shape or color of their natural teeth, an all-porcelain crown can be used to improve the look of their smile.

All-porcelain crowns are also very durable and can last several years if properly cared for. Like traditional crowns, all-porcelain crowns are sent to a lab to be fabricated and take 2 weeks to be finished. Once the crown is returned, it is bonded to the patient’s tooth. The dentist will also adjust the bite and fit if needed. After the crown is bonded the patient will leave the office with a crown that looks and functions like their own teeth.
